Your Papers, Please! [Apr. 28th, 2008|06:32 pm]

There’s already been a hubbub about requiring an ID to fly, but the issue has gone further: the Supreme Court has ruled that it is not unconstitutional for states to require photo IDs to vote. I can understand that there is no right in the Constitution to fly, but obviously the right to vote is protected by the Constitution. What do you think—no big deal, or is Jefferson rolling over in his grave?

First they came for the ID-less, and I didn’t speak up…

Park Place Apartments: Review [Apr. 22nd, 2008|02:37 am]

I’m mostly doing this so that people might be able to find this on Google, etc. I hope that some people find this on the Internet and will learn from my mistakes.

Park Place Apartments 212 3rd St Troy, NY 12180

Review Title: Don’t live here!

Written Review:

I lived here for years and things went from mediocre to worse as the place changed hands soon after I arrived. I only lived here initially because it was a good value (cheaper than other places but still decent condition). Since then rent has been raised twice. Don’t expect any maintenance to your apartment either – any non-emergencies will fall on deaf ears. The staff made many promises about improvements but, other than a large project to put in a new HVAC system (which was 5 months late), nothing else ever happened. Do not trust any promises made by the staff, they are empty! They never fixed anything they promised.

The elevator is nice but has to be the slowest elevator in history. Unless you’re on the first floor, you will get very tired of waiting for it to go up and down – grocery shopping, for instance, is a real pain.

The parking lot is very poorly maintained in the winter, which lasts a long time in Troy – they do not use salt or dirt, and there is no organization by the staff to get parking spots clear or assign parking. I can’t count how many times I have nearly fallen on black ice, hidden ice below snow, etc. Additionally, the landlord has parking permits but they don’t do anything. Once a week the lot will be full from an activity at the youth center. The landlord promised action – towing, a gate, etc – but again, this was another empty promise.

The last redeeming feature of this place – the garbage shoot – was closed years ago and now you have to haul your garbage to the back corner of the building. Remember the elevator and then the icey, unmaintained lot – those both make this chore particularly fun.

Lastly, you will be lucky to get your security back if you live here for a while – they will claim all kinds of problems and fees and try to deduct it from your security, which is illegal unless you actually did damage beyond wear-and-tear (even if you signed their agreement – the agreement is illegal). All of this in exchange for rising rents, no maintenance, etc – you can do a lot better for the rents they are charging.

In summary: Stay away!! I became miserable living here – leaving was the best decision I ever made. Now that I have I will probably have to file a lawsuit to get my security back. These people are scum!

Would never happen today [Apr. 5th, 2008|02:09 am]

On November 11, 1938, Law Enforcement Ranger Karl A. Jacobson, age 22, was shot and killed in the line of duty by a deer poacher in the Schoodic Peninsula Section of the park. A suspect was arrested for the murder and sentenced to one day in jail due to his old age and mental state. Acadia National Park, Wikipedia

Go Vote on Tuesday! [Feb. 4th, 2008|10:46 pm]

I agree with Ryan on who to vote for, but I would just like to say, if you are a registered Democrat or Republican, please GO VOTE ON TUESDAY! (That is, unless your state has already voted, of course.) Your voice really matters in the primary this year, as we have an incredibly close race on our hands.

Logitech G5 Laser Mouse [Jan. 23rd, 2008|02:17 am]

My 8-year old Microsoft Explorer 3.0 mouse was on the fritz so it was finally time to find a replacement. On the recommend of a friend, I set out to pick out a Logitech Laser mouse, and settled on the G5. I wasn’t a big fan of the crackled blue shell exterior (as opposed to the two-tone model), but the blue one was in stock. Newegg sold me the mouse for $50.

Overall, the mouse is brilliant. The tracking is extremely smooth and precise. The movement over the surface is as smooth as butter – they use three polytetrafluoroethylene (aka Teflon) feet on the bottom. The software is pretty good as well, although there is no explicit Mac support. As a gaming mouse, however, this is not a big surprise.

The true ridiculousness of the mouse is the customizable weight cartridge and accompanying 8×1.7g and 8×4.5g weights, allowing you to adjust the mass of your mouse to your liking. Personally, I find little reason to make my wrist sore moving around a heavy mouse, so I leave the cartridge empty.

One last point is the laser: the laser actually provides the light as an alternative to the ubiquitous LED; instead of a bright red, the laser emits invisible infrared light. This uses less power than an LED, which is of little concern in a wired mouse. It sure sounds cool that my mouse has a laser in it, but from my understanding, it serves no purpose (with one exception: the way it is designed less cat hair (and other crap) gets stuck in the sensor). The 2000 DPI sensor is really what you are paying for.

That was different [Jan. 14th, 2008|03:21 am]

Just saw Juno. Good stuff… I didn’t find it particularly hilarious but it was extremely well done.

Only slightly less recently, I got back from 4 days in Florida. It is warm there, while it is not here.

I played golf for the first time in at least 10 years; remarkably, I think I have improved. PGA Tour, here I come.

Besides that… what happens in Florida, stays in Florida?

Candidate Analysis [Jan. 8th, 2008|12:41 am]

  • Romney: Comes off as a rich, pompous asshat, who has tons of money to spend on negative ads.

  • Huckabee: The most personable and charismatic of the Republicans with the moral center Reps are looks for, but is weak on foreign policy experience.

  • McCain: Looking very positive on experience, foreign policy, and leadership, as well as being universally electable by independents and undecideds.

  • Paul: The Howard Dean of 2008. Fun to watch, but won’t get votes.

  • Thompson: This is a joke, right?

  • Giuliani: 9/11 isn’t everything, and NYC didn’t like you so much. We’ll be glad to see you go so we don’t have to hear about you talk about 9/11 anymore.

  • Clinton: Frankly, no one likes you Hillary. Running on experience and change as if she’s brought world peace, but if people want new blood, it’s not going to come from the Clinton dynasty.

  • Obama: The Huckabee of the Dems; very personable and charismatic, but needs to prove he has “what it takes” to be President.

  • Edwards: A possible VP, but people are tired of hearing this guy talk. A good teammate for Obama.

  • Richardson: Talks too much about his past positions, and every issue starts with ending the war, regardless of what the discussion is.

Personal favorite: As always, it is hard to choose between a giant douche and a turd sandwich.

Compelled to Notify [Dec. 6th, 2007|09:58 pm]

wuputah.com has changed. Mac users may notice something familiar… I guess you could say I am a fan of the Dictionary.app look.

One of these days I’m going to skin this blog. Or maybe ditch Typo… or maybe upgrade it. I don’t know why people don’t like Typo. It works, doesn’t it?

Stardust Surprisingly Good [Dec. 2nd, 2007|01:21 am]

Step through the wall to another world…

I watched Stardust primarily on the basis of its IMDB rating (8.1/10), and what I got was a very well-done fantasy movie. The basis might be similar to The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, but the plot is very much a different story. Good for all audiences, and great for couples.

I think we have a winner [Nov. 28th, 2007|10:06 pm]

I have always been on the lookout for good default disk image screens, but I think the latest version of Adium takes the cake:
